Green Star Movement spent this August and September working with the amazing students and faculty of Hearst Elementary School on Chicago’s south side. During the school day, students from fifth through eighth grades spent their art periods outside working with Green Star Movement teachers. They learned mosaic, bricolage and sculpture techniques while helping to beautify the exterior of their school and thus the neighborhood. The dynamic mural was inspired by the strong community bonds in the Hearst neighborhood during the 1950s and 60s. The mural asks community members to link their present experiences with the vibrant togetherness that ruled the neighborhood’s past to make the future brighter for generations to come.
